Squirt Kayaks:
1. Your dimensions:
Height, inseam and foot size will determine the right boat selection for your range. Please look at the Boat Designs and Sizing Info for the specifications of each boat and their recommended range.
1A. How to Measure Your Inseam
- Find a partner to help you with this process.
- You will need a tape measure and a large clipboard or thin large book.
- Remove your shoes and back up against a convenient wall.
- Place the book or clipboard between your legs with the edge square against the wall so that it acts as a T-square.
- Raise the book ALL the way while maintaining the T-square effect. Raise it to the point of being just short of painful. Make sure your heels remain on the floor and ALL tissue is compressed to the pubic bone. Males in particular often mess up this measurement by not moving accessory tissue out of the way. The measurement needs to be from the pubic bone to the floor.
- Have your partner measure and record the distance from the top of the book to the floor.
2. Performance:
Whether you are a beginning squirt boater or a seasoned pro, it is important for us to know your performance expectations. Our aim is to build you a boat that will perform to your exact expectations, so be sure to let us know exactly what you want to get out of your boat, be it a high-cut river running tool or the ultimate destination mystery machine. Note: To ensure the most absolute in custom performance, it is sometimes necessary for the customer to come to our shop to do a “float cut”. This is where we put you in the cut but unseamed boat and make sure it is trimmed and floats exactly as you wish, and then either seam the boat or recut and re-float until it’s perfect.
3. Lay-up:
We believe that no matter which lay-up, standard or beefy you choose for your new boat, you should be able to paddle it with confidence. Our standard lay-ups are tough and durable, while remaining stiff and light; they will suit most any typical application. If for any reason, you would like us to build a specific custom lay-up, we can discuss it and build a boat as per your requirement. Please see Lay-up Options for details.

Surf Kayaks:
1. Layup Options
Basic
The Basic lay-up option consists of a glass, Kevlar and foam core laminate all resin infused.
Standard
The Standard lay-up consists of a carbon, Kevlar and foam core laminate all resin infused.
The Basic is usually a bit heavier than the Standard as extra layers are needed to get the same stiffness as the carbon.
2. Sizing:
For most Surf kayak designs we build, the main issue for sizing would be paddlers weight. Inseam would come into play only if unusually long, same as foot size.
We can cut or add volume to every design to accommodate lighter or heavier paddlers. This is important, as the volume and float of the boat helps with the paddler to better be able to engage the chines or rails when carving and helps with the paddle out. A lighter paddler might feel the boat is too corky when paddling out through the break or too hard to engage the stern or bow when doing moves on the wave.
3. Performance:
Each design has certain attributes or characteristics, that’s why we have so many different designs from different designers. Some carve better, some are faster.
The biggest factor is always the paddler’s skill level or ability to adapt to the kayaks design features and surf conditions.
There is always a learning curve with every design.
Graphics
This is probably the most exciting and sometime most difficult part of ordering a new boat! Graphics and color combinations are almost endless, but the choices can lead some to perplexity; we are always more than happy to help with suggestions and ideas. Also, you can go to Colors and Graphics for metal flake and pigment selection as well as some graphics ideas.
